Family Therapy

Parenting and Family Specialist

Most of us are brought up to believe that our families should be a source of comfort, solace, and grounding. However, sometimes family problems and worries become overwhelming. At these times, our family can become a source of confusion, grief, helplessness, and even despair.

Family therapy provides help for those times when families need an advocate and an expert; someone to help them understand how to resolve their problems with the knowledge and expertise to find and implement solutions. Family therapists believe that changes will not be as effective when the whole family system is not involved.

How Family Therapy Works

I will help you implement the necessary changes to help your family feel connected again and moving together in a positive direction. Most often, the entire family will attend the first therapy sessions together. During our sessions, we explore your family’s communication patterns, family roles, and rules; what succeeds and what doesn’t. We determine your family’s strengths and fortify them while working to build up any weaknesses.

Parents will often have several sessions alone with me to determine which parenting techniques best work in their situation and to practice implementing them. Individual sessions with adults, children or adolescents may also be encouraged if we determine that it will help both the family function better.

These are some of the common issues and families seen in family therapy:

  • Divorce problems
  • Blended families
  • Adolescent rebellion
  • Emotional/physical/verbal abuse
  • Trauma, grief and loss
  • Parenting styles and skills
  • Eating disorders
